Hope For Hayton?
A Strong Start in Utah
Barrett Hayton, the fifth overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes, was expected to be a cornerstone of the franchise alongside players like Clayton Keller, Jakob Chychrun, and Dylan Strome. This core group was assembled to lift the Coyotes from the basement of the NHL, both on the ice and financially. However, the team struggled to meet those expectations; with the Coyotes failing to consistently improve while continuing to accumulate high draft picks in following seasons.
Despite these setbacks, Hayton began to show signs of progress during the 2022-23 season. At just 22 years old, he posted 43 points in 82 games, raising hopes for a breakout season in 2023-24, with many expecting him to reach 55-60 points. Unfortunately, injuries derailed those expectations, as Hayton managed just 10 points in 33 games, mirroring the Coyotes’ own struggles.
Now with the Coyotes having relocated to Utah, Hayton finds himself part of a refreshed lineup that includes rising stars like Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther. Despite this promising roster, Hayton flew under the radar in most fantasy hockey drafts, with an ADP of 469 on FanTrax, making him a late-round or waiver-wire acquisition for many. At just 24 years old, he still has plenty of room to grow and prove his potential as a top-six forward.
Utah opened their season with a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, and Hayton made his presence felt. Playing on a line with Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz, Hayton helped his line control 63% of the shot share, creating 11 scoring chances. He also recorded 7 individual shot attempts, tying Guenther for the team lead. Hayton capped off his strong performance by scoring Utah’s third goal, driving the net and tipping in a Mikhail Sergachev point shot.
Six years after his draft, Hayton is in a new environment that could finally provide the stability he needs. Surrounded by a stronger and talented supporting cast, Hayton may be poised to fulfill his early potential and establish himself as a dynamic playmaker in Utah’s top six. Utah plays Thursday on the road against the Islanders. If he has another strong performance it’s time to add him before your league mates do.
